Mitt Romney is an Idiot

Now that Mitt Romney and John McCain are in a virtual dead tie for the Republican nomination they are trying to accomplish many things, first they are resorting to some dirty tactics towards each other, they are trying to compare themselves to Ronald Reagan, they are trying to prove that they know something about the economy so that they can fix it if they take office one year from now, they are bashing the Clintons, and lastly they are trying to show that they are tax cutters. Romney did all of those in a speech yesterday, he also flip flopped more than John Kerry on the beach.

First, Romney claimed that America needs to return to what Reagan wanted it to be in 1983, “a shining city on a hill.” Which is great, the United States is one of the richest countries in the world and the lone superpower, I totally agree that we should be setting good examples for other countries. But then Romeny calimed that we shouldn’t be spending money on fixing Global Warming because it is “a GLOBAL problem, not just an AMERICA PROBLEM.” What kind of example can we set if we are not leading the way to fixing one of the biggest problems our world faces today? We can’t. This kind of thinking keeps the U.S. in the global gutter in the eyes of the rest of the western world.

Romney said that he understands Reaganomics, but he also said that he wants to get rid of the deficeit. This shows that he doesn’t understand Reaganomics. First off, Reaganomics were used by Reagan during the Cold War, more precisely the end of the Cold War, and Reagan was trying to outspend the Soviets to bankrupt them; therefore, the American people were fine with having a huge deficeit because it was ending a scary, 40 year long, nuclear arms stand-off. In 2008, we are not even close to the same situation. Not even close. Reagans situation with the Cold War was one of a few exceptions to the rule: deficeits are bad. If Romney used Reagan’s economic policies (reduce the growth of government spending, reduce marginal tax rates on income from labor and capital, reduce regulation, and control the money supply to reduce inflation), he will not have extra money to pay off the Chinese and the other lenders that we owe money to. Reagan’s plan works fine if you can afford it and with a multi-trillion dollar deficeit and a war that costs billions an hour, the United States cannot afford it. No matter how many times Romney says that he understands the economy (he said, “I understand the economy” dozens of times during this speech), he has no idea.

Another reason he has to understanding the economy is he spent time in the private sector. He must have forgotten that so have 200,000,000+ Americans. As if saying that he has actually worked in his lifetime is a legitimate reason to be able understand the economy or how to manage it. On top of that, just because you can run a business, doesn’t mean that you can manage a national (sometimes global) economy. Running a business requires maximizing profit, typically by lowering costs which means laying people off and breaking unions. In short, being the United States president requires some humanitarian efforts, running a business does not at all.

Romney also bashed Bill Clinton because he lowered military spending and size during his presidency. Romney seems to have forgotten why. It was peace time, meaning there was no war to fight. By lowering our defense spending Clinton gave the nation a surplus, that’s what you do during peace times.

In conclusion, Mitt Romney is an idiot, or at least, he thinks the American people are.

NOTE: I know that Romney graduated cum laude from Harvard. I don’t care. He is still an idiot.
